Chapter Ten
“Where is Wee Andy?” Mairi asked Rob as they rode side by side on their way to Baincroft.
Though she had seen Rob place fresh parchment and several thin lengths of charcoal just under the flaps of her pack and his own, she chose not to fish hers out.
Her throat felt only a bit tender today. Also, she now knew Rob could hear her perfectly well and writing was pointless. She had only kept to that because she thought it easier for him.
He attended her, yet he seemed preoccupied. “Hmm? Andy?”
She nodded.
“At Baincroft,” he explained in his deep, resonant voice. The unchanging timbre of it sent tremors of longing through her. How could she ever have wondered whether she liked it? None other sounded as did he, mayhaps that was why. It was so much a part of him, she had grown fond of it.
Mairi recalled how his urgent growl of desire had moved her last night. And also his promise that today he would make her his in every way. Her anticipation increased with every step their mounts took.
Rob had awakened needs in her and made her want to be a wife. His wife. She wanted him, certainly, but even more than the pleasure he would offer in the bedding, Mairi wished to know Rob. Really know him, in every way she did not already.
No question, he was kind and brave and honorable. Yet she needed to share his thoughts and his dreams and tell him hers. It seemed that, thus far, they had spent an inordinate amount of their time together avoiding intimacy.
He had been determined to delay it, though she knew he desired her as urgently as she desired him. He could hardly hide that fact when the evidence presented itself with astounding regularity. She noticed and he knew she did.
Mairi understood why he had not wanted to lie with her for the first time upon the ground during their journey, or later in his own sister’s chamber. Home—Baincroft—must represent something very precious to this man. He would want to begin their marriage in the place where they would live and grow old together, where their children would be born and where she and Rob would rest together in eternity when their time was over.
Alys had told her Rob became lord there at the age of ten when his real father had perished from a fever. No wonder he was proud of it, having ruled it for so long.
He rode a length ahead of her now in his eagerness to reach his home. Mairi wondered what awaited them there.
Wee Andy had preceded them to make ready for their arrival, just as he had on the way to Trouville’s castle. She had not seen him since he’d left them at noon the day before with their prisoner and the captured horses in tow. At least she could expect one friendly face to greet her at Baincroft.
“Will they arrange another feast for us?” she asked.
“Look there,” he ordered, ignoring her question to point out a series of low rolling hills interspersed with copses of trees.
